Americans are not the only ones to celebrate food holidays. Australia has National Melba Toast Day.
Unlike most other food holidays however, this one has a special story to it.
Melba toast is named after Dame Nellie Melba, which is the stage name of the Australian opera singer Helen Porter Mitchell (May 19, 1861-February 23, 1931).
Melba toast was created for her by her chef and fan Auguste Escoffier when she was very ill, as a part of her diet.
Interestingly, he also named the Peach Melba after her.
